Sewing Cotton Silk top by Julia
If there is a fabric that perfectly exemplifies summer sewing, then our range of Cotton Silk fabrics fit the bill! A firm favorite and clothing staple among sewists who love to sew and wear natural fibres.
Fabric Collection guest sewist, Julia, shares her inspirational handmade creation in our plain color Aubergine Silk Cotton voile fabric. "Cotton silk has to be one of my favorite fabrics to sew with and certainly one of my favorites to wear. Two natural fibres combined to make the ultimate textile —one that is light and comfortable thanks to the cotton, but with the sheen and strength that can only come from silk."
Julia's go-to summer top is a popular McCalls 7969 pattern, originally a dress pattern adjusted to a lovely wrap top version. "It's a loose-fitting, flowing design with voluminous sleeves, and the Cotton Silk is an absolute dream to wear — so comfortable that it feels like I'm wearing nothing"! Julia explained.
A very popular handmade make in the sewing community for beginner or advanced beginners, a delightfully simple sew with the combination of an easy to sew fabric and pattern. Our Cotton Silk voile is a blend of 70% Cotton and 30% Silk, ultra-lightweight, with a luxuriously soft hand feel. As well as being incredibly breathable, Cotton Silk voile has a lovely sheen, ideal for styles like pattern McCalls 7969 for hot climates. "It combines comfort and ease of wear – roomy and no closures, a style that feels current and glamourous."
Julia's creative journey highlights the hem of the front sleeve, which is slightly higher than the hem of the back sleeve. The top is made equally beautiful on the inside, with hand-stitching on the neck and sleeves, with each piece joined with French seams to create a chic, clean look.
The pattern and fabric can be worn casually as a summer blouse or styled uniquely for partywear. One of the best sewing trends this year is sewing with versatile fabrics.
